Laboratory Overview
The National Mine Safety Administration’s Key Laboratory for Intelligent Safe Mining in Non-Coal Open-Pit Mines (hereinafter referred to as the “Laboratory”) was officially approved for construction in March 2024. It is jointly established by Hongda Blasting Engineering Group Co., Ltd., Anhui University of Science and Technology, Beijing Yikong Zhijia Technology Co., Ltd., and Ansteel Group Mining Co., Ltd., with support from China Resources Building Materials Technology’s Dapai Mine. Academician Yuan Liang serves as the Director of the Laboratory’s Academic Committee, while 23 renowned academicians, professors, and experts in mining, geology, artificial intelligence, and related fields hold positions as Deputy Directors and Members of the Committee. Senior Engineer Li Pingfeng serves as the Director of the Laboratory. The Laboratory comprises eight research institutes.
The laboratory is focusing on addressing the key scientific challenges and critical technological bottlenecks in the full-process intelligent development of non-coal open-pit mining. Through research on such pivotal technologies as transparent geological modeling for non-coal open-pit mines, intelligent blasting theory and key technologies for non-coal open-pit mines, multi-process intelligent collaborative systems for excavation, loading, hauling, and dumping, and an integrated intelligent early-warning system for safe mining operations in non-coal open-pit mines, the laboratory aims to establish theoretical frameworks covering energy matching among rock, explosives, and stemming materials, the relationship between cumulative blast-induced vibration damage and slope stability, and value-chain sharing across blasting processes. On this basis, the laboratory will develop fully intelligent equipment for all stages of safe non-coal open-pit mining, enabling intelligent operation of the entire mining process—including geological surveying, drilling, blasting, excavation, hauling, and dumping—and ultimately achieving industrial-scale replication of these fully intelligent mining processes.
The laboratory is the only national platform dedicated to the R&D of practical, non-coal open-pit mining safety and intelligent extraction technologies, the development of effective, integrated equipment for such operations, and rigorous on-site, in-situ, multi-condition field validation. It serves as a premier hub for fundamental theoretical research, forward-looking key technology and equipment development, talent cultivation, and technology incubation in China’s non-coal open-pit mining intelligence sector. Its work is of paramount importance in advancing the safe and intelligent transformation of non-coal open-pit mines, enhancing mining productivity, and ensuring inherently safe mining operations. Moreover, the laboratory’s talent output and successful application of research outcomes will contribute Chinese solutions and Chinese expertise to the global development of smart mines.
