On March 28, the Party branch’s Dahongliutan Project Party group in the Xinjiang region, together with six organizations—including Xinjiang Communications Construction Company, the Nonferrous Metals Group, the Xinjiang Mining Group, Jixiang Company, and the Hongliu Town Police Station—visited Kangxiwa Martyrs’ Cemetery in Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region—the highest-altitude martyrs’ cemetery in China—to carry out a themed Party Day activity titled “Inheriting the Spirit of Qingming, Shouldering Our Mission, Upholding Our Aspirations, and Striving for New Achievements,” as well as a joint Party-building initiative. The event provided an opportunity to deeply commemorate the revolutionary martyrs and border-defending heroes who rest eternally in the Karakoram Mountains.
Remember History, Honor the Martyrs
The Kangxiwa Martyrs’ Cemetery is located in Pishan County, Xinjiang, deep in the Karakoram Mountains at an elevation of 4,280 meters. It is the final resting place of martyrs who fell during border operations in the 1960s, as well as border defense soldiers who heroically sacrificed their lives over the decades to safeguard China’s western frontier. Generation after generation of heroes have written a magnificent epic—“The interests of the motherland come first”—with their very lives.
The memorial ceremony commenced to the stirring strains of the “March of the Volunteers.” All attendees stood at attention in formation and sang the national anthem with solemnity. Thereafter, everyone removed their hats and observed three minutes of silent mourning, paying the highest tribute to the revolutionary martyrs. The entire Party branch of Dahuangliutan then faced the Party flag and reaffirmed their oath of admission, their resolute vows echoing across the plateau and underscoring the unwavering faith of Communist Party members.
Honoring the Heroes, Passing on the Torch
During the reading of the memorial address, representatives from various enterprises recalled the glorious history embodied by the Kangxiwa Martyrs’ Cemetery. The address stated: “The Karakoram Mountains enshrine the loyal bones, and the snowy plateau forges the heroic spirits. You watered this land with your fervent blood and defended our national dignity with your lives… It is now our duty to carry forward the martyrs’ legacy, uphold the spirit of heroes, and forge ahead on the journey of the new era.”
The ceremony to lay flower baskets commenced, with representatives from various organizations sequentially presenting wreaths and flower baskets at the Monument to Martyrs. All attendees then laid small white flowers and performed three bows in solemn tribute.
Subsequently, everyone proceeded to the Martyrs’ Cemetery, where they meticulously cleaned the grounds, carefully wiped the tombstones, and paid their respects at the Martyrs’ Memorial Hall and the Exhibition Hall of Martyrs’ Deeds. Through these visits, they gained a deeper understanding of the martyrs’ lives and accomplishments and profoundly appreciated the noble qualities that characterized these pioneers: “unafraid of hardship and adversity, and unwavering in spirit even in the face of oxygen deprivation.”
